Season Ends on a High for Under 13s
t
After a tough season Thurlow under 13s finished with a win at the Whittlesford Warriors 5-a-side tournament. The team was split in two, yellows and blues, who met each other in the final.
Both teams lost their opening games and both finished runners-up in the group stages. In the semi-finals they then played the team their counterparts had previously lost to and both duly took revenge.
The blues had a nervy affair in their semi against Papworth Blasters. After squandering several chances in a game they should have won comfortably the score remained 0-0 at the end of extra time. Each penalty taker for the blues drilled home and the win was secured by the heroics of keeper Darren Cooley.
The yellows took on Haslingfield who looked to be the hot favourites, not losing or conceeding in the group stages and beating the Thurlow blues along the way. After a sleepy start, letting in an early goal gave the yellows a much needed wake up call. Great work from Bentham set up Iron who finished superbly against the previously unbeaten Haslingfield keeper. Two more goals from Witham and Botton swiftly followed for the dominant yellows in a game Haslingfield never looked like getting back in to.
The all Thurlow final was as tight as expected. A great finish from Bates gave the blues the lead but Iron now brimming with confidence soon restored parity. Yellows went closest to stealing the win as Ryan hit the crossbar and Botten's lob from 25 yards dropped the wrong side of the bar. It was to be decided on penalties with that man Cooley making another fine save to hand the advantage back to the blues. The hero this time was Ryan Mule who calmly slotted home the winning penalty.
